What is Photoshop? - Images: Japanese

Hey there, everyone!

If this is your first time here, welcome aboard! And if we've crossed paths in another article, great to see you again. This is the Photoshop beginner's course — glad to have you here. "Photoshop" is the full name, and it's commonly shortened to just "Photoshop" in everyday conversation.

So, what is Photoshop, exactly? Photoshop is a software application for editing and creating images, developed by Adobe. Its capabilities are remarkably powerful — from its initial release as 'Photoshop 1.0' in the early 1990s all the way to the present day, it has consistently been known as the go-to tool for image editing.

Originally, Photoshop was used mainly in the print industry. Back in the days when ADSL internet was spreading, a lot of web professionals were actually using a program called 'Fireworks', developed by Macromedia, for image editing and creation. Over time, however, Macromedia was acquired by Adobe, and the features from 'Fireworks' were absorbed into Photoshop. As more and more large companies started building their workflows around Photoshop, it became standard practice — these days, roughly 98% of image assets delivered in the web industry come as Photoshop files.

So whether you're a designer or a front-end developer who just needs to check image assets, knowing the basics of Photoshop has become something of a necessity. If you're looking to work in the web industry, it's worth putting in the time to learn it. It can feel a bit quirky at first, but once you get used to it, it's really not that difficult.

In the next article, we'll go through installing Photoshop. Let's keep at it — see you there.
